Injective hull
Definition
Let be a ring and let be an -module. An essential extension of is an injective homomorphism of -modules such that every nonzero submodule of satisfies . An injective hull (or injective envelope) of is an essential extension such that is an injective module. It is written or .
Remarks
Every module has an injective hull, and two injective hulls and are related by an isomorphism with . Equivalently, an injective hull is a maximal essential extension, or a minimal injective module containing . Example: over , the inclusion is an injective hull; is divisible, hence injective, and a nonzero subgroup of containing also contains . Non-example: the inclusion , , has an injective target but is not essential, since the submodule meets the image only in . For a prime , the injective hull of over is the Prüfer group .
