Definition
Let and be Banach spaces over or , with continuous duals and . Let be their algebraic tensor product. For in , let This number does not depend on the representation of , and is a norm on , the injective norm. The injective tensor product is the completion of for .
Remarks
The norm is a cross norm: , by the Hahn–Banach theorem. It is at most the projective norm . The bounds on and are needed: without them, scaling makes the supremum infinite for every .
Example: let with the Euclidean norm and . Then , over unit vectors . The projective norm of is , so the two norms differ.
For compact Hausdorff spaces and , the map extends to an isometry of onto . More generally, is the space of continuous functions from to with the sup norm.
