Definition

Let f ⁣:ℝn×ℝm→ℝnf \colon \R^n \times \R^m \to \R^n be locally Lipschitz with f(0,0)=0f(0, 0) = 0. Consider the control system x˙(t)=f(x(t),u(t))\dot x(t) = f(x(t), u(t)), where the inputs u ⁣:[0,∞)→ℝmu \colon [0, \infty) \to \R^m are measurable and essentially bounded, with norm ∥u∥∞=ess sup⁡t≥0∣u(t)∣\norm{u}_\infty = \operatorname{ess\,sup}_{t \ge 0} \abs{u(t)}. A function γ ⁣:[0,∞)→[0,∞)\gamma \colon [0, \infty) \to [0, \infty) is of class 𝒦\mathcal{K} if it is continuous, strictly increasing and γ(0)=0\gamma(0) = 0. A function β ⁣:[0,∞)×[0,∞)→[0,∞)\beta \colon [0, \infty) \times [0, \infty) \to [0, \infty) is of class 𝒦ℒ\mathcal{KL} if two conditions hold. For each tt, β(⋅,t)\beta(\cdot, t) is of class 𝒦\mathcal{K}; for each rr, β(r,⋅)\beta(r, \cdot) is nonincreasing with limit 00 at infinity. The system is input-to-state stable (ISS) if there are β\beta of class 𝒦ℒ\mathcal{KL} and γ\gamma of class 𝒦\mathcal{K} with this property. For every x0∈ℝnx_0 \in \R^n and every input uu, the solution with x(0)=x0x(0) = x_0 exists for all t≥0t \ge 0 and satisfies ∣x(t)∣≤β(∣x0∣,t)+γ(∥u∥∞)for all t≥0.\abs{x(t)} \le \beta(\abs{x_0}, t) + \gamma(\norm{u}_\infty) \quad \text{for all } t \ge 0.

Remarks

Example: x˙=−x+u\dot x = -x + u on ℝ\R. By variation of constants, x(t)=e−tx0+∫0te−(t−s)u(s) dsx(t) = e^{-t} x_0 + \int_0^t e^{-(t - s)} u(s) \, ds. Hence ∣x(t)∣≤e−t∣x0∣+∥u∥∞\abs{x(t)} \le e^{-t} \abs{x_0} + \norm{u}_\infty, so the system is ISS with β(r,t)=re−t\beta(r, t) = r e^{-t} and γ(r)=r\gamma(r) = r.

Non-example: x˙=−x+xu\dot x = -x + x u on ℝ\R. For u=0u = 0 the origin is globally asymptotically stable. But for the constant input u=2u = 2 the equation is x˙=x\dot x = x, so x(t)=etx0x(t) = e^t x_0 is unbounded, and no estimate of the ISS form can hold.

Taking u=0u = 0 shows that an ISS system has a globally asymptotically stable equilibrium at 00. An equivalent characterisation uses an ISS Lyapunov function VV: a smooth, positive definite, proper function with ∇V(x)⋅f(x,u)≤−α(∣x∣)+σ(∣u∣)\nabla V(x) \cdot f(x, u) \le -\alpha(\abs{x}) + \sigma(\abs{u}) for some class 𝒦\mathcal{K} functions α\alpha (unbounded) and σ\sigma.
