Definition
Let be a commutative ring and let be a subring of . An element is integral over if there are an integer and elements such that Equivalently, is a root of a monic polynomial in . More generally, for a ring homomorphism , an element is integral over if it is integral over the subring .
Remarks
Example: is integral over , because and is monic with integer coefficients.
Non-example: is not integral over . By the rational root theorem, a rational root of a monic polynomial with integer coefficients is an integer.
The following are equivalent for :
- is integral over .
- The subring is a finitely generated -module.
- is contained in a subring of that is a finitely generated -module.
The proof of 3 implies 1 uses the determinant trick. When and are fields, an element is integral exactly when it is algebraic, since a nonzero polynomial over a field can be divided by its leading coefficient.
