Interpretation of varieties
Builds on Variety of algebrasTerm operation
Definition
Let be a variety of signature and let be a variety of signature . An interpretation of in is a map with the following properties. It assigns to each -ary operation symbol of a -term . For in , let be the algebra on the universe of where each acts as the term operation . Then belongs to for every in . The variety is interpretable in if an interpretation of in exists.
Remarks
Example: let be the variety of Boolean algebras, with operations , and let be the variety of Boolean rings. The assignment , , , , is an interpretation. In every Boolean ring these term operations satisfy the Boolean algebra identities. Non-example: let be the variety of semigroups and the variety of groups, and assign to the semigroup product the group term . This is not an interpretation, since in the group the operation is not associative: but . It suffices to check the defining identities of on the free algebras of .
