statement proposition

Intersection of subspaces

Statement

Let FF be a field, let VV be a vector space over FF, and let UU and WW be linear subspaces of VV. Then U∩WU \cap W is a linear subspace of VV. It is the largest subspace of VV that is contained in both UU and WW. More generally, the intersection of each nonempty family of subspaces of VV is a subspace of VV.

Remarks

The union U∪WU \cup W is a subspace only when U⊆WU \subseteq W or W⊆UW \subseteq U. The smallest subspace that contains U∪WU \cup W is the sum U+WU + W. In R3\R^3, two different planes through the origin meet in a line through the origin.

Explanations

L1 human

A vector that lies in two subspaces stays in both of them when we add or scale. So the common part of two subspaces is again a subspace. Two planes through the origin in space cross in a line, which is a subspace.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 3 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.

What depends on this

2 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
