Interval arithmetic
Builds on Interval
Definition
Let be the set of closed bounded intervals with real . For and an operation , set where for one requires . Interval arithmetic is with these four operations. For and they are given by:
- ;
- ;
- ;
- when .
Remarks
Each set is again a closed bounded interval, because it is the image of the compact connected set under a continuous map. Example: has the products of the end points, so it is ; indeed takes every value between and for and . Non-example: is not defined, because and the set is unbounded. Addition and multiplication are associative and commutative, but unless has one point, and only the subdistributive law holds in general. For example, , while .
