Invariant mass
Builds on Minkowski spaceFour-momentum
Definition
Let be Minkowski space with , and let be the speed of light. Let a system of particles have four-momenta , each future-directed timelike or null, and let be the total four-momentum. The invariant mass of the system is In an inertial frame where , this reads .
Remarks
A sum of future-directed timelike or null vectors is future-directed timelike or null, so and is a real number . Since is preserved by Lorentz transformations, does not depend on the inertial frame. For one particle of mass , and . Example: two photons with four-momenta and give , so although each photon has mass . Non-example: the sum of the relativistic masses of the particles is not the invariant mass: it equals , which depends on the frame. When there is a frame where , the centre-of-momentum frame, and there .
