Definition
Let be a group and let be the real vector space of bounded functions . For and , let be the function . A left-invariant mean on is a linear form with these three properties.
- Positivity: for every .
- Normalization: , where is the constant function .
- Invariance: for every and .
Remarks
Right-invariant and two-sided invariant means are defined in the same way. A group has a left-invariant mean if and only if it is amenable. A left-invariant mean gives a left-invariant finitely additive measure on all subsets of , with , and every such arises in this way.
Example: for a finite group , the average is a left-invariant mean. Positivity and normalization are clear, and invariance holds because is a bijection of .
Non-example: on , the evaluation is positive and normalized but not invariant. For and , the function is , so .
On , invariant means exist by the Hahn–Banach theorem, for example Banach limits, but none can be given by an explicit formula. For a locally compact group, one uses with respect to Haar measure in place of .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
