Statement

Let GG be a topological group, and let AP(G)AP(G) be the space of almost periodic functions G→ℂG \to \C. For f∈AP(G)f \in AP(G) and a∈Ga \in G, let (Laf)(x)=f(ax)(L_a f)(x) = f(a x), (Raf)(x)=f(xa)(R_a f)(x) = f(x a) and fˇ(x)=f(x−1)\check f(x) = f(x^{-1}). There is exactly one linear map M ⁣:AP(G)→ℂM \colon AP(G) \to \C such that:

  1. M(𝟏)=1M(\mathbf{1}) = 1, where 𝟏\mathbf{1} is the constant function 11;
  2. M(f)≥0M(f) \ge 0 whenever f≥0f \ge 0;
  3. M(Laf)=M(f)M(L_a f) = M(f) for all a∈Ga \in G and f∈AP(G)f \in AP(G).

This map also satisfies M(Raf)=M(f)M(R_a f) = M(f) and M(fˇ)=M(f)M(\check f) = M(f), and M(f)>0M(f) > 0 whenever f≥0f \ge 0 and f≠0f \ne 0.

Remarks

Von Neumann's proof shows that the closed convex hull of the left translates of ff contains exactly one constant function, and M(f)M(f) is that constant. A shorter proof uses the Bohr compactification β ⁣:G→bG\beta \colon G \to bG. Every f∈AP(G)f \in AP(G) is F∘βF \circ \beta for one continuous FF on bGbG, and M(f)M(f) is the integral of FF against the normalized Haar measure of bGbG. For G=ℝG = \R the mean is M(f)=lim⁡T→∞12T∫−TTf(x) dx.M(f) = \lim_{T \to \infty} \frac{1}{2T} \int_{-T}^{T} f(x) \, dx. For instance, M(eiλx)=0M(e^{i\lambda x}) = 0 for λ≠0\lambda \ne 0, and M(∣cos⁡x+cos⁡(2x)∣2)=1M(\abs{\cos x + \cos(\sqrt{2} x)}^2) = 1. For a compact group GG, MM is the integral against normalized Haar measure.

Going deeper

For a student

The mean MM is an invariant mean on the subspace AP(G)AP(G) of bounded functions, and it exists for every topological group, amenable or not. It turns AP(G)AP(G) into a pre-Hilbert space with inner product M(fgˉ)M(f \bar g). In that space the coefficients of inequivalent irreducible finite-dimensional unitary representations satisfy Schur orthogonality relations, which leads to von Neumann's Fourier theory of almost periodic functions. The same uniqueness holds for weakly almost periodic functions, by the Ryll-Nardzewski fixed-point theorem.
