Definition
Let be meromorphic functions near , and consider the linear equation The point is an irregular singular point (or irregular singularity) if it is a singular point but not a regular singular point. Equivalently, is not analytic at for at least one . The point is irregular singular if is irregular singular for the equation obtained by the substitution .
Remarks
Example: has , and is not analytic at , so is an irregular singular point. Its solutions are the constants and , and the derivative of the latter has an essential singularity at .
Non-example: has and , both analytic, so is a regular singular point and not irregular; its solutions are and .
For , the point is irregular for exactly when or is not analytic at . For example, is irregular for the Bessel equation, the Airy equation and the equation , whose solutions have essential singularities at .
