Irreversible process
Summary
An irreversible process is a process that is not reversible: the system and its surroundings cannot both be brought back to their initial states. All real processes are irreversible, because of friction, heat flow across temperature differences, mixing and similar effects. In an irreversible process the total entropy of the system and its surroundings increases.
