Definition
Let and let be a simply connected domain of points with pairwise distinct coordinates. For each , consider the Fuchsian linear system where are holomorphic. Fix a base point with for all and all . The family is an isomonodromic deformation if it has a fundamental matrix with the following property. is holomorphic in for near and . Its monodromy matrices along loops around the points , moved continuously with , do not depend on .
Remarks
The family is isomonodromic if the matrices satisfy the Schlesinger equations where . For systems with singular points , , and , these equations reduce to the sixth Painlevé equation in the variable .
Example: if all are constant and commute with each other, the Schlesinger equations hold, since all commutators vanish. For , the system is with solution , and the monodromy around is ; it does not depend on when the are constant.
Non-example: for and , take on a domain ; the monodromy around changes with , so the family is not isomonodromic.
