Definition

Let (M,g)(M, g) be a Riemannian manifold with Levi-Civita connection ∇\nabla and curvature R(X,Y)Z=∇X∇YZ−∇Y∇XZ−∇[X,Y]ZR(X, Y)Z = \nabla_X \nabla_Y Z - \nabla_Y \nabla_X Z - \nabla_{[X, Y]} Z, see Riemann curvature tensor. Let γ ⁣:I→M\gamma \colon I \to M be a geodesic, and let DtD_t be the covariant derivative along γ\gamma. A smooth vector field JJ along γ\gamma is a Jacobi field if Dt2J+R(J,γ′)γ′=0on I.D_t^2 J + R(J, \gamma')\gamma' = 0 \quad \text{on } I.

Remarks

Example: on the unit sphere S2S^2, let γ\gamma be a unit-speed geodesic and EE a parallel unit field along γ\gamma orthogonal to γ′\gamma'. For J=sin⁡(t)EJ = \sin(t) E, one has Dt2J=−sin⁡(t)ED_t^2 J = -\sin(t) E and, since the curvature is 11, R(J,γ′)γ′=sin⁡(t)ER(J, \gamma')\gamma' = \sin(t) E; the sum is 00, so JJ is a Jacobi field.

Non-example: on the same sphere, J=tEJ = tE has Dt2J=0D_t^2 J = 0 but R(J,γ′)γ′=tE≠0R(J, \gamma')\gamma' = tE \ne 0 for t≠0t \ne 0, so JJ is not a Jacobi field, although it is one in the flat plane.

If Γ(s,t)\Gamma(s, t) is a smooth family of geodesics t↦Γ(s,t)t \mapsto \Gamma(s, t), then J(t)=∂sΓ(0,t)J(t) = \partial_s \Gamma(0, t) is a Jacobi field, and every Jacobi field along a geodesic on a compact interval arises in this way. A Jacobi field is determined by J(t0)J(t_0) and DtJ(t0)D_t J(t_0) at one time, so the Jacobi fields along γ\gamma form a vector space of dimension 2n2n, where n=dim⁡Mn = \dim M. The fields γ′\gamma' and tγ′t \gamma' are always Jacobi fields; the interesting ones are normal to γ\gamma. With the opposite sign convention for RR, the equation reads Dt2J+R(γ′,J)γ′=0D_t^2 J + R(\gamma', J)\gamma' = 0.
