Jacobi sum

Summary

A Jacobi sum is a sum ∑aχ(a)λ(1−a)\sum_{a} \chi(a)\lambda(1 - a) over a finite field, built from two multiplicative characters χ\chi and λ\lambda. It counts, in a weighted way, the solutions of x+y=1x + y = 1. When χ\chi, λ\lambda and χλ\chi\lambda are nontrivial, it is a quotient of Gauss sums. Then its absolute value is the square root of the field size. Jacobi sums are used to count points on curves such as xn+yn=1x^n + y^n = 1 over finite fields and to prove cubic and quartic reciprocity.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
