Join and meet
Builds on Partial orderSupremumInfimum
Definition
Let be a partially ordered set and let . The join of and is the supremum of in , when it exists. So it is an element with and , such that for every with and . It is written . The meet of and is the infimum of in , when it exists. It is written . More generally, the join and the meet of a subset are its supremum and its infimum.
Remarks
Example: in the power set of a set , ordered by , the join of and is . Indeed contains and , and every set that contains and contains . Dually, the meet is . Non-example: in the poset with , , , and no other strict relations, the elements and have no join. They have two upper bounds, and , and neither is below the other, so there is no least upper bound. When they exist, joins and meets are unique, and holds exactly when , and exactly when .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
