Jones polynomial
Definition
Let be the set of isotopy classes of oriented tame links in . Let , and be oriented links with diagrams that agree outside a small disk. Inside the disk, has a positive crossing, has a negative crossing, and has the two strands resolved without crossing, respecting the orientation. The Jones polynomial is the unique map such that:
- for the unknot ;
- for every such triple.
Remarks
Existence is the main theorem; uniqueness holds because changing crossings in any diagram reaches an unlink, and the relation computes the rest. Example: a one-crossing diagram of the unknot gives and the two-component unlink . The relation gives , so . For the trefoils, for one and for its mirror image. Non-example: the map satisfies clause 1 but not clause 2, since . In terms of the Kauffman bracket, at , where is the writhe of a diagram of . Mirror image changes to .
