Jordan–Dedekind chain condition
Builds on Partial orderChainMaximal chain
Definition
Let be a partially ordered set. For in , let . A finite chain has length . The poset satisfies the Jordan–Dedekind chain condition when the following holds for all in . All maximal chains of are finite and have the same length.
Remarks
Example: the positive divisors of under divisibility satisfy the condition. A maximal chain of multiplies by one prime at each step, so its length is the number of prime factors of counted with multiplicity. Non-example: the pentagon with and fails it, since and are maximal chains of with lengths and . Let be finite with a least element . Then satisfies the condition if and only if has a rank function. In that case, setting equal to the length of any maximal chain of gives a rank function. Every modular lattice of finite length satisfies the condition.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
