Jordan identity
Builds on FieldAssociative algebraJordan algebra
Statement
Let be a field of characteristic different from , and let be an associative algebra over . For put . Then for all the Jordan identity holds: Hence with the product is a Jordan algebra, written .
Remarks
Proof idea: , so both sides are symmetrized products with . Expanding gives . Expanding the right side gives , the same four terms. The product is commutative, so satisfies both axioms of a Jordan algebra.
Example: for real matrices, has , so both sides vanish for every .
Equivalent forms: write for the map . In a commutative algebra the Jordan identity says that and commute for every . The product is not associative in general. For the matrix units , one has but .

For a student
The algebras and their subalgebras are the special Jordan algebras, and they are the main source of examples. The Jordan identity implies that a Jordan algebra is power-associative, so powers are well defined. Linearizing the identity, that is, replacing by and comparing coefficients of , gives multilinear identities that hold in every Jordan algebra over a field of characteristic . Not every Jordan algebra is of the form or a subalgebra of one: the Albert algebra of Hermitian octonion matrices is exceptional.
