Definition
Let be a complex Hilbert space. Let be the real vector space of bounded self-adjoint operators on , with the operator norm . For put . A Jordan operator algebra, or JC-algebra, on is a real linear subspace such that:
- for all ;
- is closed in the norm topology.
Remarks
Each JC-algebra is a special Jordan algebra, as a Jordan subalgebra of . Clause 1 is equivalent to for all , since .
Example: and the real symmetric matrices. For symmetric and , , so clause 1 holds, and is closed because it is finite-dimensional.
Non-example: for , the real span of the Pauli matrices and fails clause 1. Indeed , and is not a combination of and .
A JC-algebra that is closed in the weak operator topology is called a JW-algebra.
