Definition
Let be a ring with identity, let be its K-theory spectrum, and let be an integer. Let be the cofibre, or mapping cone, of the map , multiplication by on the spectrum. For , the K-group of with coefficients in is the homotopy group The same definition applies to any exact or Waldhausen category, or scheme, in place of .
Remarks
The cofibre sequence gives the universal coefficient sequence where is the subgroup of elements of killed by , part of the torsion subgroup. For , one can also write , pointed homotopy classes of maps from the mod Moore space into the plus construction.
Example: for a field , is torsion-free, so . For and this is infinite, generated by the classes of and of the primes.
Non-example: is in general not . For , the group is divisible, since when , so . But is the group of -th roots of unity, so .
