K-theory K2 and Steinberg groups Example

K2 of the integers

Example

Milnor showed that K2(ℤ)≅ℤ/2ℤK_2(\Z) \cong \Z/2\Z. The nonzero element is the Steinberg symbol {−1,−1}\set{-1, -1}. In the Steinberg group St(ℤ)St(\Z) it is the element w4w^4, where w=x12(1) x21(−1) x12(1)w = x_{12}(1) \, x_{21}(-1) \, x_{12}(1).

Check that w4w^4 lies in K2(ℤ)K_2(\Z). The image of ww in GL(ℤ)GL(\Z) is (1101)(10−11)(1101)=(01−10),\begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix} \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 0 \\ -1 & 1 \end{pmatrix} \begin{pmatrix} 1 & 1 \\ 0 & 1 \end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix} 0 & 1 \\ -1 & 0 \end{pmatrix}, and this matrix has order 44, so w4w^4 maps to the identity.

Check that {−1,−1}\set{-1, -1} is not trivial: the inclusion ℤ→ℝ\Z \to \R induces K2(ℤ)→K2(ℝ)K_2(\Z) \to K_2(\R), which sends {−1,−1}\set{-1, -1} to {−1,−1}\set{-1, -1}. The real Hilbert symbol is a Steinberg symbol with value −1-1 on (−1,−1)(-1, -1), so this image is not trivial.

The upper bound, that K2(ℤ)K_2(\Z) has at most two elements, uses the Euclidean algorithm to reduce words in the Steinberg group.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
