Statement

Let GG be a torsion-free discrete group. Let Cr∗(G)C^*_r(G) be its reduced group C*-algebra, the norm closure of the group algebra ℂ[G]\C[G] acting on ℓ2(G)\ell^2(G) by left translations. The conjecture states that the only projections in Cr∗(G)C^*_r(G), that is, the elements pp with p=p∗=p2p = p^* = p^2, are 00 and 11.

Remarks

The hypothesis that GG is torsion-free is needed. If g∈Gg \in G has finite order n>1n > 1, then p=1n(1+g+⋯+gn−1)p = \frac{1}{n}(1 + g + \cdots + g^{n-1}) is a projection different from 00 and 11.

The conjecture implies the idempotent part of Kaplansky's conjectures for the field ℂ\C. Indeed ℂ[G]⊆Cr∗(G)\C[G] \subseteq C^*_r(G), and every idempotent of a C*-algebra is similar to a projection.

The canonical trace τ\tau on Cr∗(G)C^*_r(G), given by τ(x)=⟨xδe,δe⟩\tau(x) = \ip{x \delta_e}{\delta_e}, is faithful, and 0≤τ(p)≤10 \le \tau(p) \le 1 for every projection pp. So it suffices to show that τ(p)\tau(p) is an integer. For torsion-free GG, this integrality follows from surjectivity of the assembly map of the Baum–Connes conjecture. In this way the conjecture is known for free groups, by Pimsner and Voiculescu, for torsion-free groups with the Haagerup property, and for torsion-free hyperbolic groups. It is open in general.
