Kähler–Einstein metric

Definition

Let (M,J)(M, J) be a complex manifold and let gg be a Kähler metric on MM. Thus gg is a Hermitian metric whose fundamental form ω\omega is closed. Let Ric⁡\operatorname{Ric} be the Ricci curvature of gg, and let ρ(X,Y)=Ric⁡(JX,Y)\rho(X, Y) = \operatorname{Ric}(JX, Y) be its Ricci form. The metric gg is Kähler–Einstein if there is a real constant λ\lambda such that Ric⁡=λg\operatorname{Ric} = \lambda g, or equivalently ρ=λω\rho = \lambda \omega.

Remarks

Example: the flat metric on a complex torus ℂn/Λ\C^n / \Lambda, for a lattice Λ\Lambda of rank 2n2n. It is Kähler with constant coefficients, its curvature vanishes, and so Ric⁡=0=0⋅g\operatorname{Ric} = 0 = 0 \cdot g. The Fubini–Study metric on ℂPn\C P^n is Kähler–Einstein with λ>0\lambda > 0, and the Bergman metric on the unit ball of ℂn\C^n is Kähler–Einstein with λ<0\lambda < 0.

Non-example: on ℂP1×Σ\C P^1 \times \Sigma, with Σ\Sigma a compact Riemann surface of genus 22, take the product of a round metric of curvature 11 and a metric of curvature −1-1. It is Kähler, but Ric⁡\operatorname{Ric} equals gg on the first factor and −g-g on the second, so no single λ\lambda works.

On a compact Kähler manifold the Ricci form represents 2πc1(M)2\pi c_1(M) in de Rham cohomology. So a Kähler–Einstein metric with constant λ\lambda forces 2πc1(M)=λ[ω]2\pi c_1(M) = \lambda [\omega]: the first Chern class is negative, zero or positive according to the sign of λ\lambda. A Kähler–Einstein metric is an Einstein metric in the Riemannian sense.
