KAK decomposition

Builds on Semisimple Lie groupCartan decomposition of a Lie groupExponential map of a Lie group

Statement

Let GG be a connected semisimple Lie group with finite center and Lie algebra ๐”ค\mathfrak{g}. Let ๐”ค=๐”จโŠ•๐”ญ\mathfrak{g} = \mathfrak{k} \oplus \mathfrak{p} be a Cartan decomposition, as in the Cartan decomposition of a Lie group. Let KK be the connected subgroup with Lie algebra ๐”จ\mathfrak{k}. Let ๐”žโІ๐”ญ\mathfrak{a} \subseteq \mathfrak{p} be a maximal abelian subspace, and let A=expโก๐”žA = \exp \mathfrak{a}. Let NK(๐”ž)N_K(\mathfrak{a}) and ZK(๐”ž)Z_K(\mathfrak{a}) be the normalizer and the centralizer of ๐”ž\mathfrak{a} in KK under the adjoint action. Let W=NK(๐”ž)/ZK(๐”ž)W = N_K(\mathfrak{a}) / Z_K(\mathfrak{a}). Then G=KAKG = KAK: each gโˆˆGg \in G can be written g=k1expโก(H)k2g = k_1 \exp(H) k_2 with k1,k2โˆˆKk_1, k_2 \in K and Hโˆˆ๐”žH \in \mathfrak{a}. In such a product, HH is unique up to the action of WW on ๐”ž\mathfrak{a}.

Remarks

The idea of the proof: by the Cartan decomposition, g=kexpโกXg = k \exp X with Xโˆˆ๐”ญX \in \mathfrak{p}. Each element of ๐”ญ\mathfrak{p} is conjugate under Ad(K)\mathrm{Ad}(K) to an element of ๐”ž\mathfrak{a}, so X=Ad(k2โˆ’1)HX = \mathrm{Ad}(k_2^{-1}) H and expโกX=k2โˆ’1expโก(H)k2\exp X = k_2^{-1} \exp(H) k_2. Uniqueness comes from the fact that two elements of ๐”ž\mathfrak{a} conjugate under Ad(K)\mathrm{Ad}(K) are conjugate under the Weyl group WW.

Example: G=SLn(โ„)G = \mathrm{SL}_n(\R), K=SO(n)K = \mathrm{SO}(n), AA the positive diagonal matrices of determinant 11. The theorem is the singular value decomposition g=k1diagโก(ฯƒ1,โ€ฆ,ฯƒn)k2g = k_1 \operatorname{diag}(\sigma_1, \dots, \sigma_n) k_2. Here WW is the symmetric group SnS_n, and the singular values are unique up to order.

The factors k1k_1 and k2k_2 are not unique: for g=eg = e one may take k1=kk_1 = k, H=0H = 0, k2=kโˆ’1k_2 = k^{-1} for any kโˆˆKk \in K.

Going deeper

For a student

The decomposition is the group form of the fact that KK acts on the symmetric space G/KG/K and each orbit meets the flat Aโ‹…oA \cdot o. It gives polar coordinates on GG. In these coordinates the Haar measure has a density in HH, a product of powers of โˆฃsinhโกฮป(H)โˆฃ\abs{\sinh \lambda(H)} over the positive restricted roots ฮป\lambda. This is the starting point of harmonic analysis on G/KG/K and of the study of spherical functions.
