Kakeya set
Description
Let . A Kakeya set, or Besicovitch set, is a compact set that contains a line segment of length in every direction. That is, for each unit vector there is a point with . The closed ball of radius about the origin is a Kakeya set. For a unit vector , the segment from to lies in the ball. Besicovitch showed that there are Kakeya sets in with Lebesgue measure zero. If is such a set, then is a Kakeya set in of measure zero. Indeed, let be a unit vector. Take a segment of in the direction of with length . The last coordinates then move by for , starting from a suitable corner of the cube.
Remarks
Although a Kakeya set may have measure zero, Davies proved in 1971 that every Kakeya set in has Hausdorff dimension . The Kakeya conjecture asks whether every Kakeya set in has Hausdorff dimension . In 2025 Hong Wang and Joshua Zahl posted a proof for . Some authors do not require a Kakeya set to be compact.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
