Definition
Let be a four-dimensional manifold and let be a circle of circumference with coordinate . Let be a Lorentzian metric on , a one-form on , a function on and a constant. Kaluza–Klein theory is five-dimensional general relativity on for the Lorentzian metric The fields must not depend on (the cylinder condition). The dynamics is given by the five-dimensional vacuum Einstein field equations for .
Remarks
Under a change of coordinate , the one-form changes as , which is a gauge transformation of electromagnetism. So behaves as an electromagnetic potential, with field strength , the electromagnetic tensor. Example: with and , the metric with the Minkowski metric is flat, so it solves the five-dimensional vacuum equations. Reducing the five-dimensional Einstein–Hilbert action over gives the four-dimensional Einstein–Hilbert action, the Maxwell action (with chosen suitably) and terms for the scalar . Non-example: a metric whose components depend on fails the cylinder condition; such fields describe the massive Kaluza–Klein modes, whose masses are multiples of .
