Statement

Let KK be a field and let GG be a torsion-free group. Then the only idempotents of the group ring K[G]K[G] are 00 and 11. That is, if e∈K[G]e \in K[G] and e2=ee^2 = e, then e=0e = 0 or e=1e = 1.

Remarks

The conjecture is one of Kaplansky's conjectures on group rings, and it is open in general. It follows from the zero divisor conjecture for K[G]K[G], since an idempotent ee satisfies e(1−e)=0e(1 - e) = 0. Torsion-freeness is needed: if g∈Gg \in G has finite order n>1n > 1 and nn is invertible in KK, then e=1n(1+g+⋯+gn−1)e = \frac{1}{n}(1 + g + \cdots + g^{n-1}) is an idempotent other than 00 and 11. For K=ℂK = \C it is implied by the Kadison–Kaplansky conjecture for the reduced group C*-algebra, which follows from the Baum–Connes conjecture. If KK has characteristic zero, it holds for every torsion-free group GG for which the K-theoretic Farrell–Jones conjecture holds for K[G]K[G]; this includes all torsion-free hyperbolic groups. For K=ℂK = \C, Kaplansky proved that the coefficient of the identity element in an idempotent ee is a real number between 00 and 11. He also proved that this coefficient is 00 only when e=0e = 0.
