Kappa mechanism
Summary
The kappa mechanism is the main process that drives stellar pulsation in classical pulsating stars such as Cepheids and RR Lyrae stars. The letter stands for the opacity of the stellar gas. In a layer where the opacity rises when the gas is compressed, radiation is trapped during compression and released during expansion. The layer then works like a heat engine and feeds energy into the oscillation.
