Stellar pulsation
Summary
Stellar pulsation is the periodic oscillation of a star about its state of hydrostatic equilibrium. Mathematically the small oscillations are the normal modes of the linearised equations of a self-gravitating fluid sphere. The periods depend on the internal structure of the star, so pulsations are a probe of stellar interiors. Pulsating stars such as Cepheids also serve as distance indicators.
