Helioseismology
Builds on Stellar pulsationSpherical harmonics
Definition
Model the Sun as a self-gravitating, rotating fluid sphere with sound speed , density and angular velocity . Here is the radius and the colatitude. Its global oscillations are pulsation modes with frequencies . They are labelled by a radial order and by the degree and azimuthal order of a spherical harmonic . Helioseismology is the determination of , , and related quantities inside the Sun from the observed frequencies and other properties of these oscillations.
Remarks
Example: the splitting of a multiplet is to first order times an integral of against a kernel concentrated in the region sampled by the mode. Inverting many splittings gives the internal rotation profile. Non-example: inferring the interior of the Sun only from its luminosity and radius through a stellar model is not helioseismology, because no oscillation data enter. For high radial order and low degree , the p-mode frequencies follow the asymptotic relation . Here is the large separation, is the solar radius and is a constant of order . Local helioseismology studies wave travel times and local wave fields instead of global mode frequencies.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
