Asteroseismology

Builds on Stellar pulsation

Definition

Model a star as a self-gravitating fluid sphere. Its internal structure, such as sound speed and density as functions of radius, is unknown, and so are its mass, radius and age. Asteroseismology is the determination of this structure and these parameters from the observed frequencies of the pulsation modes of the star.

Remarks

Example: for solar-like oscillators, the large separation Δν\Delta\nu between modes of consecutive radial order scales as Δν∝M/R3\Delta\nu \propto \sqrt{M / R^3}. Here MM is the mass and RR the radius. Together with the frequency of maximum power, Δν\Delta\nu gives estimates of MM and RR. The reason is that Δν=(2∫0Rdr/c(r))−1\Delta\nu = \big(2 \int_0^R dr / c(r)\big)^{-1} is the inverse of the sound crossing time, which scales as the dynamical time R3/(GM)\sqrt{R^3 / (G M)}. Non-example: measuring the radius of a star by interferometry alone is not asteroseismology, because no oscillation frequencies are used. The case of the Sun is called helioseismology.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
