Kennedy's theorem on instant centres

Builds on Instant centre of rotation

Statement

Let three rigid bodies 11, 22, 33 move in a plane. For distinct i,ji, j, let PijP_{ij} be the instant centre of rotation at a given instant of the motion of body jj relative to body ii. Assume that the three relative angular velocities ωij\omega_{ij} are nonzero, so that the three points exist. Then P12P_{12}, P13P_{13} and P23P_{23} lie on one straight line.

Remarks

Proof idea: compute the velocity, relative to body 11, of the point P23P_{23} in two ways. As a point moving with body 22, it has velocity ω12J(P23−P12)\omega_{12} J (P_{23} - P_{12}); as a point moving with body 33, it has velocity ω13J(P23−P13)\omega_{13} J (P_{23} - P_{13}), where JJ is the rotation by π/2\pi/2. These agree because P23P_{23} has the same velocity in bodies 22 and 33, so ω12(P23−P12)=ω13(P23−P13)\omega_{12}(P_{23} - P_{12}) = \omega_{13}(P_{23} - P_{13}). If ω12≠ω13\omega_{12} \ne \omega_{13} this writes P23P_{23} as an affine combination of P12P_{12} and P13P_{13}; if ω12=ω13\omega_{12} = \omega_{13} it gives P12=P13P_{12} = P_{13}; in both cases the three points are collinear.

Example: take a four-bar linkage with fixed frame 11, crank 22, coupler 33 and rocker 44. The centre P13P_{13} lies on the line through the pivots P12P_{12} and P23P_{23} and on the line through P14P_{14} and P34P_{34}. So it is the intersection of the crank line and the rocker line.

The result is also called the Aronhold–Kennedy theorem or the three-centres theorem.

Going deeper

For a student

For a mechanism with nn links there are n(n−1)/2n(n-1)/2 instant centres. Those at physical pin joints are known directly, and Kennedy's theorem locates the others as intersections of lines through known centres. Once the centres are known, the velocity ratio between two links follows from distances between centres, without solving any equations. It is the main graphical method of planar velocity analysis, and its spatial analogue concerns the instantaneous screw axes of three bodies.
