Definition

Let DD be a diagram of an oriented tame link LL, with crossings ordered 1,…,n1, \ldots, n, of which n+n_+ are positive and n−n_- are negative. Let A=ℤ[x]/(x2)A = \Z[x]/(x^2), graded by deg⁡1=1\deg 1 = 1 and deg⁡x=−1\deg x = -1. For v∈{0,1}nv \in \set{0,1}^n, let DvD_v be the diagram where crossing ii gets the 00-smoothing (A-smoothing of the Kauffman bracket) if vi=0v_i = 0 and the 11-smoothing otherwise. Let kvk_v be the number of circles of DvD_v and r(v)=v1+⋯+vnr(v) = v_1 + \cdots + v_n. Put Cv=A⊗kvC_v = A^{\otimes k_v}, with quantum grading shifted up by r(v)+n+−2n−r(v) + n_+ - 2n_-. The chain group in homological degree ii is Ci(D)=⨁r(v)=i+n−CvC^i(D) = \bigoplus_{r(v) = i + n_-} C_v. For an edge v→v′v \to v' that changes one 00 to a 11, the map Cv→Cv′C_v \to C_{v'} is:

  1. m ⁣:A⊗A→Am \colon A \otimes A \to A if two circles merge, with m(1⊗1)=1m(1 \otimes 1) = 1, m(1⊗x)=m(x⊗1)=xm(1 \otimes x) = m(x \otimes 1) = x, m(x⊗x)=0m(x \otimes x) = 0;
  2. Δ ⁣:A→A⊗A\Delta \colon A \to A \otimes A if one circle splits, with Δ(1)=1⊗x+x⊗1\Delta(1) = 1 \otimes x + x \otimes 1 and Δ(x)=x⊗x\Delta(x) = x \otimes x;

and the identity on the other circles. The differential d ⁣:Ci(D)→Ci+1(D)d \colon C^i(D) \to C^{i+1}(D) is the sum of these edge maps, each with a sign (−1)s(-1)^{s}. Here ss is the number of 11s in vv before the changed position. The Khovanov homology of LL is Khi,j(L)=Hi(C(D))Kh^{i,j}(L) = H^i(C(D)) in quantum degree jj.

Remarks

The map dd satisfies d2=0d^2 = 0 and preserves the quantum grading. Up to isomorphism, Khi,j(L)Kh^{i,j}(L) does not depend on the diagram DD. Example: the round diagram of the unknot has n=0n = 0, so the complex is AA in degree 00 and KhKh is ℤ\Z in bidegrees (0,1)(0, 1) and (0,−1)(0, -1). Its graded Euler characteristic q+q−1q + q^{-1} is the unnormalized Jones polynomial of the unknot. In general ∑i,j(−1)iqjrank⁡Khi,j(L)=(q+q−1)VL(t)\sum_{i,j} (-1)^i q^j \rank Kh^{i,j}(L) = (q + q^{-1}) V_L(t) at t1/2=−qt^{1/2} = -q, where VLV_L is the Jones polynomial. Non-example: the homology of the complex ⨁vCv\bigoplus_v C_v with the signs omitted is not defined, because without signs the faces of the cube commute and d2≠0d^2 \ne 0.
