Definition
Let be a topological manifold. Let and be the stable groups of homeomorphisms and of piecewise linear homeomorphisms of Euclidean spaces, with classifying spaces and . The stable tangent microbundle of has a classifying map . The forgetful map is a fibration up to homotopy, with fibre . By a theorem of Kirby and Siebenmann, is an Eilenberg–MacLane space : its only nonzero homotopy group is . The Kirby–Siebenmann class is the obstruction class, in singular cohomology with coefficients , to lifting to a map .
Remarks
The -dimensional manifold has in . For a closed simply connected topological -manifold with even intersection form, is the signature divided by , taken modulo , and the form has signature .
A space that is not a manifold, such as a finite graph with a vertex of degree three, has no tangent microbundle, so the definition does not apply to it.
If has a piecewise linear structure, or a smooth structure, then . Conversely, if and , then has a piecewise linear structure; for any , if and only if has one. The class is natural: for an open subset , is the restriction of .
