Kloosterman sum
Builds on Exponential sumIntegers modulo nComplex exponential
Definition
Let be an integer, and let . For a real , write . For an integer coprime to , let be an integer with . The Kloosterman sum is where runs over a set of representatives of the invertible classes of the integers modulo m.
Remarks
The value does not depend on the choice of representatives or of , since the phase is defined modulo . Example: , . The pairs are , so the phases are and Non-example: the sum over all residues is not defined, since does not exist when . The sum is real, because replacing by conjugates each term. If , then . For , the sum is the Ramanujan sum . It is an exponential sum in which the phase function is .
