KMS state
Definition
Let be a C*-algebra. Let be a one-parameter group of -automorphisms of such that is norm continuous for every . Let , and let . A state on is a -KMS state if for all there is a function such that:
- is bounded and continuous on , and analytic in the interior of ;
- for all ;
- for all .
Remarks
Every KMS state is invariant: for all . Example: let , let be a Hermitian matrix, and let . The Gibbs state satisfies the condition with . At , cyclicity of the trace turns this into ; for this and the Gibbs state is the only KMS state. Non-example: if is not a multiple of the identity, the normalized trace is not a -KMS state for . For and entire analytic for , the condition reads .
