Knot concordance

Builds on KnotSlice knotKnot sum

Definition

Let K0K_0 and K1K_1 be oriented tame knots in S3S^3. They are concordant if there is a smoothly and properly embedded annulus A≅S1×[0,1]A \cong S^1 \times [0, 1] in S3×[0,1]S^3 \times [0, 1] such that ∂A=(K0×{0})∪(K1×{1})\partial A = (K_0 \times \set{0}) \cup (K_1 \times \set{1}). The orientation of AA must induce the given orientation on K0K_0 and the opposite one on K1K_1. A concordance class is an equivalence class under this relation.

Remarks

Isotopic knots are concordant, since the trace of an isotopy is a concordance. A knot is concordant to the unknot if and only if it is slice. The concordance classes form an abelian group 𝒞\mathcal{C} under knot sum, with the class of the unknot as zero. The inverse of KK is K∗K^*, the mirror image of KK with reversed orientation. Example: K#K∗K \# K^* is slice, so it is concordant to the unknot. Non-example: the trefoil knot is not concordant to the unknot, since its signature is nonzero. Signature is additive under knot sum, so the trefoil has infinite order in 𝒞\mathcal{C}.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
