Definition

Let K⊂S3K \subset S^3 be an oriented tame knot. Let (Σ,𝜶,𝜷,w,z)(\Sigma, \boldsymbol{\alpha}, \boldsymbol{\beta}, w, z) be a doubly pointed Heegaard diagram for (S3,K)(S^3, K), built from a Heegaard splitting of genus gg. Here 𝜶=(α1,…,αg)\boldsymbol{\alpha} = (\alpha_1, \ldots, \alpha_g) and 𝜷=(β1,…,βg)\boldsymbol{\beta} = (\beta_1, \ldots, \beta_g) are attaching curves, and w,zw, z are basepoints off them. Let 𝕋α=α1×⋯×αg\mathbb{T}_\alpha = \alpha_1 \times \cdots \times \alpha_g and 𝕋β=β1×⋯×βg\mathbb{T}_\beta = \beta_1 \times \cdots \times \beta_g, viewed as tori in the symmetric product Sym⁡g(Σ)\operatorname{Sym}^g(\Sigma). Let CFK^(K)\widehat{CFK}(K) be the 𝔽2\F_2-vector space with basis 𝕋α∩𝕋β\mathbb{T}_\alpha \cap \mathbb{T}_\beta. Its differential is ∂x=∑y#(ℳ(ϕ)/ℝ) y,\partial x = \sum_{y} \# \big( \mathcal{M}(\phi) / \R \big) \, y, summed over yy and over Whitney disk classes ϕ\phi from xx to yy with Maslov index 11 and nw(ϕ)=nz(ϕ)=0n_w(\phi) = n_z(\phi) = 0. Here ℳ(ϕ)\mathcal{M}(\phi) is the moduli space of holomorphic representatives of ϕ\phi, counted modulo 22. The knot Floer homology HFK^(K)\widehat{HFK}(K) is the homology of (CFK^(K),∂)(\widehat{CFK}(K), \partial).

Remarks

It carries a Maslov grading mm and an Alexander grading aa, and up to isomorphism it does not depend on the diagram. The graded Euler characteristic is the Conway-normalized Alexander polynomial: ∑m,a(−1)mdim⁡HFK^m(K,a) ta=ΔK(t)\sum_{m,a} (-1)^m \dim \widehat{HFK}_m(K, a) \, t^a = \Delta_K(t). Example: the unknot has a genus-00 diagram on S2S^2 with one generator, so HFK^\widehat{HFK} is 𝔽2\F_2 in bidegree (0,0)(0, 0). Non-example: if the condition nz(ϕ)=0n_z(\phi) = 0 is dropped, the complex computes HF^(S3)≅𝔽2\widehat{HF}(S^3) \cong \F_2, which forgets the knot. Ozsváth and Szabó proved that the Seifert genus of KK is the largest aa with HFK^(K,a)≠0\widehat{HFK}(K, a) \ne 0.
