Statement
Let be the unit disc, and let be a univalent function. Then the image contains the open disc with centre and radius .
Remarks
After replacing by , one may assume is in the class . If , then is again in , and its second coefficient is . Bieberbach's inequality for functions in , which follows from the Grönwall area theorem, gives and , hence , that is, . The constant is sharp: the Koebe function is in and omits the value . Injectivity is necessary: has and , but omits the value , which is close to for large .

For a student
The theorem is the basic covering theorem of univalent function theory. It gives the distance estimate for univalent , where the upper bound comes from the Schwarz lemma. This compares the hyperbolic metric of a simply connected domain with the reciprocal of the distance to its boundary, up to a factor . Together with the Koebe distortion theorem, it gives the compactness of the class in the topology of locally uniform convergence. For maps that need not be injective, Bloch's theorem gives a much weaker covering result.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
