Definition

Consider a turbulent flow of an incompressible fluid with kinematic viscosity ν>0\nu > 0. Let ε>0\varepsilon > 0 be the mean rate of dissipation of kinetic energy per unit mass. The Kolmogorov microscales are the length, time and velocity scales η=(ν3ε)1/4,τη=(νε)1/2,uη=(νε)1/4.\eta = \left( \frac{\nu^3}{\varepsilon} \right)^{1/4}, \qquad \tau_\eta = \left( \frac{\nu}{\varepsilon} \right)^{1/2}, \qquad u_\eta = (\nu \varepsilon)^{1/4}.

Remarks

They are the unique combinations of ν\nu, with units m2/s\mathrm{m^2/s}, and ε\varepsilon, with units m2/s3\mathrm{m^2/s^3}, with units of length, time and velocity. They satisfy η=uητη\eta = u_\eta \tau_\eta and uηη/ν=1u_\eta \eta / \nu = 1, so the Reynolds number of the smallest eddies is 11, the balance of inertia and viscosity. If LL is the size of the large eddies and uu their speed, with ε∼u3/L\varepsilon \sim u^3 / L, then L/η∼Re3/4L / \eta \sim \mathrm{Re}^{3/4} with Re=uL/ν\mathrm{Re} = u L / \nu. So a full simulation in three dimensions needs of the order of Re9/4\mathrm{Re}^{9/4} grid points.

Example: in air with ν=1.5×10−5 m2/s\nu = 1.5 \times 10^{-5}\ \mathrm{m^2/s} and ε=1 m2/s3\varepsilon = 1\ \mathrm{m^2/s^3}, one gets η≈0.24 mm\eta \approx 0.24\ \mathrm{mm}, τη≈3.9 ms\tau_\eta \approx 3.9\ \mathrm{ms} and uη≈6.2 cm/su_\eta \approx 6.2\ \mathrm{cm/s}; indeed 0.24 mm/3.9 ms≈6.2 cm/s0.24\ \mathrm{mm} / 3.9\ \mathrm{ms} \approx 6.2\ \mathrm{cm/s}. Non-example: the quantity (ν/ε)1/4(\nu / \varepsilon)^{1/4} is not a microscale; it has units s1/2\mathrm{s^{1/2}}, neither a length nor a time.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
