Definition
Let be a topological space. Two points are topologically indistinguishable when every open set of that contains one of them also contains the other. This is an equivalence relation on . The Kolmogorov quotient of is the quotient set with the quotient topology.
Remarks
Equivalently, if and only if . The space is a T0 space. The quotient map is open and closed, and is a bijection from the open sets of to the open sets of . If is already , then is a homeomorphism.
Example: let be a pseudometric space with its topology. Here if and only if , because a point with has a ball around that misses . So is the metric space obtained by identifying points at distance .
Non-example: the identity map of a two-point set with the trivial topology is not a Kolmogorov quotient map. Its target is not , since and have the same neighbourhoods; the Kolmogorov quotient of this space is a single point.
