Definition
Identify with , with complex coordinate and height . Let be an oriented knot in such that the height restricted to is a Morse function. Let and be the minimum and the maximum of on . Let be the -vector space of chord diagrams on the circle modulo the four-term relation and the one-term relation. The one-term relation kills every diagram with an isolated chord. Let be the completion of by degree. For , let be a choice of two distinct points of at height , for each . Let be the chord diagram with these chords, and the number of chosen points where is oriented downward. The Kontsevich integral of is
Remarks
Each integral converges, and is unchanged by isotopies that keep the number of critical points of the height fixed. Let be the number of critical points and the unknot embedded with two maxima and two minima. Then the normalized , with the product in , is an isotopy invariant of . Example: the degree- part of is the empty chord diagram with coefficient , since the term is the constant . Non-example: the unnormalized is not an invariant, because adding a pair of critical points multiplies it by , which is not . Every rational-valued finite type invariant of type factors through followed by a linear map on the part of degree .

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
