Partial differential equations Definition
Korteweg–De Vries equation
Definition
The Korteweg–De Vries equation is the partial differential equation for an unknown real function of and . Here subscripts denote partial derivatives, for example .
Remarks
Example: for , the function with is a solution. Substituting gives , and after one integration . With and , one computes , which equals .
Non-example: is not a solution, because .
Other normalisations are common, such as , obtained by replacing with . Any equation with reduces to this form by scaling , and .
