Statement

Let XX be a real Banach space and let K⊆XK \subseteq X be a closed convex cone with K∩(−K)={0}K \cap (-K) = \set{0}. Assume that KK is total, that is, the set K−K={u−v:u,v∈K}K - K = \set{u - v : u, v \in K} is dense in XX. Let T ⁣:X→XT \colon X \to X be a compact operator with T(K)⊆KT(K) \subseteq K and with spectral radius r(T)>0r(T) > 0. Then r(T)r(T) is an eigenvalue of TT with an eigenvector in KK: there is u∈Ku \in K, u≠0u \ne 0, with Tu=r(T)uTu = r(T) u.

Remarks

Proof idea: for λ>r(T)\lambda > r(T) the resolvent (λI−T)−1=∑n≥0Tn/λn+1(\lambda I - T)^{-1} = \sum_{n \ge 0} T^n / \lambda^{n+1} maps KK into KK. Using totality of the cone one shows that r(T)r(T) lies in the spectrum and that the resolvent blows up along vectors of KK as λ\lambda decreases to r(T)r(T). Normalizing (λI−T)−1x(\lambda I - T)^{-1} x for suitable x∈Kx \in K and using compactness of TT to pass to a limit gives a nonzero eigenvector in KK.

Example: let X=ℝnX = \R^n, let KK be the vectors with nonnegative entries, and let TT be a matrix with nonnegative entries and r(T)>0r(T) > 0. The theorem gives the weak form of the Perron–Frobenius theorem: r(T)r(T) is an eigenvalue with a nonnegative eigenvector.

The hypothesis r(T)>0r(T) > 0 is needed: the Volterra operator (Vf)(x)=∫0xf(t) dt(Vf)(x) = \int_0^x f(t)\,dt on C[0,1]C[0, 1] is compact and maps nonnegative functions to nonnegative functions, but r(V)=0r(V) = 0 and VV has no eigenvalue at all.

A stronger form holds when KK has nonempty interior and TT maps K∖{0}K \setminus \set{0} into the interior of KK. Then r(T)>0r(T) > 0, it is a simple eigenvalue with an eigenvector in the interior of KK, and every other eigenvalue λ\lambda satisfies ∣λ∣<r(T)\abs{\lambda} < r(T).

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is a main tool for principal eigenvalues of elliptic operators. The inverse of such an operator, with suitable boundary conditions, is compact and positive on a space of continuous functions, so it has a positive eigenfunction. This gives the existence of a positive first eigenfunction of the Dirichlet Laplacian and similar results in population dynamics and bifurcation theory.
