Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1 be an integer, and let KK be a field whose characteristic does not divide nn. Assume that KK contains the group μn\mu_n of nn distinct nn-th roots of unity. Fix an algebraic closure K‾\overline{K} of KK. For a subgroup BB of K×K^\times that contains K×n={xn:x∈K×}K^{\times n} = \set{x^n : x \in K^\times}, let K(Bn)K(\sqrt[n]{B}) be the subfield of K‾\overline{K} generated over KK by all β∈K‾\beta \in \overline{K} with βn∈B\beta^n \in B. A Kummer extension of exponent nn of KK is an extension of the form K(Bn)K(\sqrt[n]{B}). For such an extension L=K(Bn)L = K(\sqrt[n]{B}), the Kummer pairing is the map Gal⁡(L/K)×B/K×n→μn,⟨σ,b⟩=σ(β)β,\Gal(L/K) \times B/K^{\times n} \to \mu_n, \qquad \langle \sigma, b \rangle = \frac{\sigma(\beta)}{\beta}, where β∈L\beta \in L is any element with βn=b\beta^n = b. Kummer theory is the study of these extensions through this pairing.

Remarks

The pairing is well defined: two choices of β\beta differ by a factor in μn⊆K\mu_n \subseteq K, which σ\sigma fixes. The main theorem of Kummer theory: L/KL/K is a Galois extension with abelian Galois group of exponent dividing nn, and if B/K×nB/K^{\times n} is finite the pairing is perfect, so Gal⁡(L/K)≅Hom⁡(B/K×n,μn)\Gal(L/K) \cong \Hom(B/K^{\times n}, \mu_n). The map B↦K(Bn)B \mapsto K(\sqrt[n]{B}) is a bijection from the subgroups BB with K×n⊆B⊆K×K^{\times n} \subseteq B \subseteq K^\times and B/K×nB/K^{\times n} finite onto the finite abelian extensions of KK in K‾\overline{K} of exponent dividing nn. In particular, for a∈K×a \in K^\times, the extension K(an)/KK(\sqrt[n]{a})/K is cyclic of degree equal to the order of aa in K×/K×nK^\times / K^{\times n}.

Example: K=ℚK = \Q, n=2n = 2, μ2={±1}\mu_2 = \set{\pm 1}, and BB generated by ℚ×2\Q^{\times 2}, 22 and 33. Then L=ℚ(2,3)L = \Q(\sqrt{2}, \sqrt{3}), and B/ℚ×2B/\Q^{\times 2} has order 44, so Gal⁡(L/ℚ)≅(ℤ/2ℤ)2\Gal(L/\Q) \cong (\Z/2\Z)^2, as expected.

Non-example: K=ℚK = \Q and n=3n = 3. The field ℚ\Q does not contain the three cube roots of unity, so the definition does not apply, and indeed ℚ(23)/ℚ\Q(\sqrt[3]{2})/\Q is not even Galois.
