Statement

Let (X,d)(X, d) be a nonempty metric space. Let ℓ∞(X)\ell^\infty(X) be the Banach space of bounded functions X→ℝX \to \R with the norm ∥f∥∞=sup⁡y∈X∣f(y)∣\norm{f}_\infty = \sup_{y \in X} \abs{f(y)}. Fix a point x0∈Xx_0 \in X. For x∈Xx \in X, define Φ(x) ⁣:X→ℝ\Phi(x) \colon X \to \R by Φ(x)(y)=d(x,y)−d(x0,y).\Phi(x)(y) = d(x, y) - d(x_0, y). Then each Φ(x)\Phi(x) lies in ℓ∞(X)\ell^\infty(X), and Φ ⁣:X→ℓ∞(X)\Phi \colon X \to \ell^\infty(X) is an isometry onto its image. That is, ∥Φ(x)−Φ(x′)∥∞=d(x,x′)\norm{\Phi(x) - \Phi(x')}_\infty = d(x, x') for all x,x′∈Xx, x' \in X.

Remarks

By the triangle inequality, ∣d(x,y)−d(x′,y)∣≤d(x,x′)\abs{d(x, y) - d(x', y)} \le d(x, x') for every yy. With x′=x0x' = x_0, this shows that Φ(x)\Phi(x) is bounded by d(x,x0)d(x, x_0). In general, it gives ∥Φ(x)−Φ(x′)∥∞≤d(x,x′)\norm{\Phi(x) - \Phi(x')}_\infty \le d(x, x'). Taking y=x′y = x' gives the value d(x,x′)d(x, x'), so equality holds.

If XX is bounded, the simpler map x↦d(x,⋅)x \mapsto d(x, \cdot) already works. If XX is separable, the same idea with a countable dense subset embeds XX isometrically in the sequence space ℓ∞\ell^\infty.

Going deeper

For a student

Since ℓ∞(X)\ell^\infty(X) is complete, the closure of Φ(X)\Phi(X) is a complete metric space containing XX densely. This gives a quick construction of the completion of a metric space. The embedding also lets one take convex hulls and straight segments of points of XX inside a Banach space. For compact XX and YY, it shows that the distance on the Gromov–Hausdorff space can be computed inside the single space Z=ℓ∞Z = \ell^\infty.
