Definition
Let be a measure space, and let be or . A measurable function is essentially bounded if there is with . Its norm is the essential supremum The space is the set of essentially bounded measurable functions modulo equality almost everywhere, with the norm .
Remarks
Example: on with Lebesgue measure, let for rational and otherwise. The set where is countable, so it has measure , and . So is the zero element of .
Non-example: on is not essentially bounded. For each , the set contains the interval , which has positive measure.
The infimum in the definition is attained: almost everywhere. With the counting measure on a set , is the space of bounded families with the supremum norm.
