Builds on Formal power seriesCoefficient of a power seriesGenerating function

Statement

Let KK be a field of characteristic 00. Let ϕ(w)∈K[ ⁣[w] ⁣]\phi(w) \in K[\![w]\!] be a formal power series with ϕ(0)≠0\phi(0) \ne 0. Then there is a unique formal power series T(z)∈K[ ⁣[z] ⁣]T(z) \in K[\![z]\!] with T(0)=0T(0) = 0 and T(z)=z ϕ(T(z))T(z) = z\, \phi(T(z)). For every H(w)∈K[ ⁣[w] ⁣]H(w) \in K[\![w]\!] and every integer n≥1n \ge 1, [zn] H(T(z))=1n[wn−1] H′(w) ϕ(w)n,[z^n]\, H(T(z)) = \frac{1}{n} [w^{n-1}]\, H'(w)\, \phi(w)^n, where [zn]F[z^n] F is the coefficient of znz^n in FF. In particular, [zn] T(z)=1n[wn−1] ϕ(w)n[z^n]\, T(z) = \frac{1}{n} [w^{n-1}]\, \phi(w)^n.

Remarks

Proof idea: work with formal Laurent series, where the coefficient of w−1w^{-1} in a derivative is always 00. Change the variable from zz to w=T(z)w = T(z), so z=w/ϕ(w)z = w / \phi(w). The coefficient of z−1z^{-1} in z−n−1H(T(z))z^{-n-1} H(T(z)) becomes a coefficient of w−1w^{-1}, and an integration by parts gives the formula.

Example: rooted labelled trees have the exponential generating function T(z)=zeT(z)T(z) = z e^{T(z)}. With ϕ(w)=ew\phi(w) = e^w, the theorem gives [zn]T=1n⋅nn−1(n−1)!=nn−1n![z^n] T = \frac{1}{n} \cdot \frac{n^{n-1}}{(n-1)!} = \frac{n^{n-1}}{n!}. So there are nn−1n^{n-1} rooted trees on nn labelled vertices.

Example: with ϕ(w)=(1+w)2\phi(w) = (1 + w)^2, the series TT counts binary trees by internal nodes. The theorem gives [zn]T=1n(2nn−1)[z^n] T = \frac{1}{n} \binom{2n}{n-1}, which is the Catalan number CnC_n.

The hypothesis ϕ(0)≠0\phi(0) \ne 0 makes the problem meaningful. If ϕ(0)=0\phi(0) = 0, then T=0T = 0 is the only solution with T(0)=0T(0) = 0, and the equation counts nothing. Characteristic 00 is used to divide by nn. There is also an analytic version for holomorphic ϕ\phi near 00, which then gives the Taylor series of the inverse function.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem is the main tool for counting trees and tree-like structures. A family of rooted trees defined by the allowed numbers of children has a generating function with T=z ϕ(T)T = z\, \phi(T), where ϕ\phi records the allowed numbers of children. In the symbolic method such equations arise at once from the recursive description of the trees. The form with HH counts forests, since a sequence of kk trees has generating function TkT^k. Equivalently, the theorem computes the coefficients of the compositional inverse of z/ϕ(z)z / \phi(z).
