Definition
Let be a symplectic manifold of dimension . Let be a submanifold with inclusion map . The submanifold is Lagrangian if:
- , and
- , that is for all and .
Remarks
Example: in with , the plane . It has dimension , and on it , so .
Non-example: the plane in the same space has dimension , but restricts to on it, so clause 2 fails. Such a plane is called symplectic.
Clause 2 alone forces , so Lagrangian submanifolds are the isotropic submanifolds of largest dimension. In a cotangent bundle with its canonical form, the graph of a -form on is Lagrangian exactly when is closed. A diffeomorphism is a symplectomorphism exactly when its graph is Lagrangian in with the form .
